Farmertree was established in 2015 by a collective of paddy farmers from Kuttand region in the state of Kerala, India. The farmer producer company is a spinout of the International Centre for Technological Innovations, initially funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development under Producers' Organization Development and Upliftment Corpus' Fund (PRODUCE) Scheme.
Kuttanad is well known for its vast paddy fields and geographical peculiarities. The region has the lowest altitude in India, and is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried below sea level. Farmers of Kuttinad are famous for Biosaline Farming. United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has declared the Kuttanad Farming System as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.
The company now collectivizes producers in several agriculture sectors, especially small and marginal farmers, to address the many challenges of agriculture but most importantly, improved access to investments, technology, inputs and markets.
